Eat to Live or Live to Eat?

How important is food? Well , seeing as it keeps people alive I would have to say that it is pretty important. Not being able to afford food to keep you and your families is alive is not just a small issue. Do you qualify for food stamps? Have you tried applying? Would you be interested in applying? If not what’s holding you back? There are people all over the world that are applying, receiving, and abusing food stamps that they are given. Friends of mine receive food stamps and they say that they are given more money than they could possibly know what to do with. They often offer my mother their link cards to go shopping for dinner. Although it is a generous offer, it is not right. There are many difficult steps to receive food stamps, and if caught passing your link card around, you could be dealing with criminal prosecution, or losing your food stamps altogether. Not only are people passing around their link cards, they are also buying things with absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. People are going from eating to live, to living to eat. There need to be cut backs, limitations, and certain boundaries as to what people can do with their food stamps. Not only are people going about the wrong way using their food stamps, but some people are being denied food stamps because of the amounts of money they receive from their jobs. As college students, we all know that by the time you receive your pay check, pay car insurance, rent, and the phone bill, there is not enough money left over to go and buy yourself groceries for the week. Shouldn’t people who are working to support themselves and their families be able to have access to the benefits that other people get? If we all quit our jobs, and just decided we didn’t want to work anymore, where would they get money for food stamps? The qualifications should change, and so should the limitations of what people should be able to do with them.

  2. I like that you started this entry by raising some basic questions -- it leads into the rest of the blog very nicely. And I like some of the facts that you bring up about unlawful use of Link Cards -- I didn't know that before. It also appears that you have strong credibility on the topic. Great job!

  3. Very well argued. Sometimes I feel like my life would be better if I just gave up. My friend who works at walmart talk to a woman who had had a link for 20 years. Your introduction is designed well to convince the reader to care about the issue.

  4. You did a very good job on expressing your opinion with this issue. It is clear that you know about this first hand and i would agree there should be some changes. It isant fair for college students who are busting their asses to not recieve any help because of some loop hole of having to much money, where as people who dont try can eat just as well as someone who is financially stable.
